“Tough times never last, but tough people do.” ~Robert Schuller
CrossFit Happy Valley pioneered the concept of CrossFit designed specifically for athletes 45 and older.
The idea of “Crossfit Masters” was not new, as there was already a Masters category for the Crossfit Games (50 yrs old and older), but CrossFit Happy Valley’s approach was more holistic in that we created a program and Crossfit classes designed with the older athlete in mind.
This was the foundation of CrossFit Happy Vally LEGENDS.
The idea was that while CrossFit is broad, general, and inclusive, it’s a fact that older athletes have different needs based on a number of things including pre-existing injuries (sports and non sports related), health issues, longer recovery times, decreased muscle and bone density, etc.
Older athletes needed an environment that was a strength and conditioning program geared toward them, but that was also a learning environment. The learning aspect is that whether they were athletes earlier in their lives, or never picked up a ball, there is knowledge to be shared about our aging bodies and how to prolong our health and activity level so we can continue to be strong and healthy for years to come.
CrossFit Happy Valley Legends program currently has athletes ranging from 45 to 75 years old (that’s not a limitation, we’re still recruiting some 80+ yr olds), former collegiate and professional athletes, and people who never played sports in their lives. The common bond is, at this stage in their lives, they want to be the healthiest and strongest they can be. This past spring we had a number of Masters athletes competing in the CrossFit Open.
The saying around the gym is that the Legends classes aren’t any easier, they’re just different. Meaning, these aren’t scaled down versions of regular CrossFit workouts, these are as intense and difficult as anything you see for the regular CrossFit Happy Valley workout of the day (WOD). The difference is that you do them in an environment of your peers, with special instruction geared toward your needs. As in everything CrossFit, all movements and weights are scalable to your particular strength, skill level, and limitations.
The Legends class currently meets three times a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 5:30 pm. Schedule a No-Sweat Intro below to get started!
